  • Web hosts waging the battle against spam and viruses

Previously, the onus was on the user to sift through their mail to sort the valid communications from the junk and security threats. But customer expectations have changed and web site owners in particular are expecting hosting companies to play a leading role in filtering the email that comes through their systems. Various surveys have shown that between 50 and 77% of Internet users now expect their ISP or hosting service to assume this responsibility; and some companies are responding to this demand.

Vladislav Davidzon, CEO of ThinkHost.com (http://www.thinkhost.com ), recently implemented a combined spam filtering and anti-virus solution as a free feature for all ThinkHost.com's web hosting packages.

Vladislav states: "When we started ThinkHost in 1999, spam and viruses were nowhere near the problem they are today. After watching the global havoc wreaked by the recent SoBig virus, monitoring the effects on our equipment, and more importantly, our customers - we decided to tackle the issue head on".

According to CyberAtlas.com; the SoBig virus caused $29.7 billion in damages worldwide during August 2003. This was double the damages bill that the Klez virus of 2002 caused for the whole year. Small businesses, multi-national corporations and government departments were crippled by the amount of email generated by SoBig. With these figures in mind, ThinkHost also realized that SoBig type viruses would invariably hit again in the near future - with equal or worse effects.

The technical team at ThinkHost.com reviewed a number of different strategies, tested the most promising, upgraded server hardware and implemented what they believe to be one of the best hybrid server-side solutions currently available.

"We've been amazed by the accuracy with which email is processed" says Vladislav, "there's very few false positives (incorrect detections) and even then, the mail isn't deleted. Email detected as spam still goes to the client, but it's tagged as possible spam. Because of the special tag, it's simple for our clients to configure their email software to automatically redirect these messages to another folder for review later on. In the case of viruses, the client still receives the email, but the attachment is stripped off; greatly decreasing bandwidth usage and time spent in downloading."

The solutions put in place by ThinkHost also help their clients to cut their costs. Vladislav recalls: "During the SoBig onslaught, some of our customers' email folders grew up to a gigabyte in size. This could have translated into incredibly high excess storage fees for them. Of course, we didn't charge our clients excess fees as these were extraordinary circumstances; but now our clients never have to worry about this situation again".

"Our hardware isn't under as much load, our operating costs are down and our clients are happy - everyone's a winner."

  • LS Host chosen to provide web hosting for the International Yacht Charter Group
The International Yacht Charter Group, a luxury yacht charter booking company, has chosen LS Host as the sole provider for all of their Web Hosting services and email utilities. The coordination of website requirements and web hosting technology proved valuable to the decision making process. The IYC Group website uses a mySQL database in conjunction with PHP scripting to complete yacht availability searches and book charter reservations. Per consultation with Reggie Lamson, an LS Host technology representative, a Linux-based hosting plan was specified to ensure the smooth operation of their commerce enabled website.

The international IYC Group customer base spans over one hundred time zones and requires accessibility to the website 24 hours a day. The business model demands a website run-time measure of near 100% and LS Host responded with a Service Level Agreement outlining a 99.9% uptime guarantee. Besides reliable website performance, the IYC Group also stipulated web browser-based Email accounts, enabling employee access from virtually any port connected to the Internet. LS Host’s Squirrel Mail met the criteria established by the International Yacht Charter Group and also provides additional features such as Email forwarding and autoresponders.

The IYC Group requested the availability of site management tools in order to moderate control over their web hosting services. LS Host’s self-service control panel comes standard with every web hosting account and enables Email management, disk usage regulation, bandwidth (traffic) usage monitoring, site traffic analyzing, billing activity monitoring, domain name registration/transfer, password management, user management, and resource links. Besides effective site administration, LS Host’s web hosting plan provides the IYC Group with detailed website traffic statistics via Webalizer, Analog, and raw log files. These powerful marketing tools will assist IYC Group in evaluating website visitor volume, patterns, and preferences.

  • Why we need webhosts
Webhosts are companies that maintain Internet servers and rent space on them to customers wanting to post web pages. They take the information built into a web page by the client and make it accessible to people browsing the Internet. Without webhosts there would be very few things for surfers to view online. Pages do not just appear online as they are designed. They need to be held by a server, which is a piece of computer hardware, and then made available through their own unique web address. Well placed key words regarding the subject of the page will help Internet users find your information if it is on a topic they seek.

Comparison shopping is always a prudent idea no matter what you are hoping to purchase. If you are looking to secure space on the Internet for your web page web hosting comparison is a very good idea especially if you are a new online presence. There are different requirements for different types of pages and not all agreements you can make will satisfy your needs. A web hosting comparison will explain the different types of services and bring forward the leaders in the service. You should determine the kind of page you are going to have before you commit to a hosting contract. You will want to make sure you have enough space for your needs or on the other hand, you are not paying for moiré than you will ever use.

Making a simple page is easy for most people but they all need website hosting services to put their pages online. There are thousands of companies around the world that offer website hosting services and each one has a slightly different offer. The main thing that they have in common is that they all offer to rent space on the Internet through their servers. They will arrange to make your page visible to people browsing the Internet. • A web hosting directory can help you select the best service for your needs
Are you looking for a host for your web page but are confused by all the choices? Do you have a web page you want to put online but have no idea how to do it? A good place for you to start to learn what you need and how to get it is with a web hosting directory. A web hosting directory will not only offer you a list of companies that will host your web page but they will also provide reviews of these companies. Picking the right host is not as simple as choosing any old company. They all offer slightly different services and offer different features. If you are just putting up a little personal page this is not really a very big concern. If you are posting a business page with lots of graphics, flash and text in a multi page presentation, your host will be important.

  • Hosting reviews are a big help in sorting out the best server to host your web page
It is not always easy to know what you need without a bit of help. Selecting a web hosting company can be that way and it pays to understand the market before you enter into any long-term agreements. Hosting reviews can provide you with statistics and information that will solve the mysteries of what a web host can do for you and why you need it. There is a range of service that you can receive from a webhosting company and hosting reviews will explain the differences to you and highlight which companies have the most dependable reputation for service. Technical support is as important an issue as the amount of space you need for your page.
Author: Laurie Simpson - Date: May 9, 2003

  • Learn some simple basics about hosts before selecting the best web hosting for your needs
The best web hosting for you depends on your needs. Do you want to post a small personal page or a large business page with many features on the Internet? Do you want a page with many features offered to visitors or just a simple page to hold some text information? All of these things and more will determine the best web hosting company and agreement for you. If you are new to having a web page of your own you may not understand the differences. A helpful tool for your learning is reviews that will offer you details and unbiased opinions of the business and companies offering the service. These reviews can save a lot of grief for you because selecting the wrong service can be a problem to change.
Author: Laurie Simpson - Date: May 9, 2003

  • Make sure you review web host plans for any company you are considering doing business with
These days everyone is getting a web page for their own personal use or for business. Not all web page hosts are the same and you should know a bit about them before you make a commitment to one. You should review web host plans and educate yourself about what makes them all different. Some hosts are not really hosting your page but they are reselling your account to someone else. This may not necessarily be a bad thing but it is something you should know about before you enter into an agreement. Review web host plans and getting an understanding of the service is easy. Do this before you sign anything. Once you have made an agreement with one company it is very difficult to change your service.
Author: Laurie Simpson - Date: May 9, 2003

  • Reading a web hosting review is never a waste of time
Many of us are on a fast learning curve about web pages, e-commerce and the Internet. It can be overwhelming for people just finding their way to this new media format. Selecting a company to host your web page can be confusing and reading a good web hosting review can help you to understand the options. A web hosting review will provide you with a basic understanding of the services in general and then it will also break down the qualities of each individual company offering the service to consumers. They provide an unbiased source of information on the strengths and weaknesses of each company. It can save you the trouble of finding out the hard way which service is the most reliable.
Author: Laurie Simpson - Date: May 9, 2003

  • Reading web hosting reviews before you sign an agreement can save your business page downtime and lost customers!
Advertising and sales today have moved into a new arena with the introduction of the Internet to mediums possible. Businesses and private individuals are all posting web pages to reach the people they want to contact. Web hosting reviews and directories provide useful information for comparing the services of web companies. Web hosting reviews will provide an unbiased comment on the options offered by each company and the quality of the support they offer. Not all companies offer the same service and you must be careful not to sign an agreement before you understand the differences. A bad plan is far easier to get into than to get out of. Moving your web page from one web host to another is not as easy as it sounds.
Author: Laurie Simpson - Date: May 9, 2003

  • We all need web page hosting services if we want to have a web page on the Internet
People do not always understand the process of getting their web pages on the Internet. Even though they may have access to many pages they do not know that web page hosting is enabling this. A web page cannot just appear without someone providing web page hosting and a way to bring your page to the world. The space that each host offers may vary and some services are cheaper than others. Low cost is not necessarily a good thing if you want your business to have a high exposure online. Comparing different hosts and what they offer will help you to understand how the services differ and what it could mean to your exposure. Have a look at some of the pages each company already hosts and see the quality presented.
